Christian Bale proved instantly to be the perfect casting for the titular role, with an ambitious performance that effortlessly captured all three levels of the character.
Taking the lore and mythology of Batman seriously, with a decidedly realistic and gritty approach, Nolan would rescue the masked vigilante from his flashy, schlock-ridden past and reinvent the hero with the definitive on-screen telling of his origin story. Moving away from the campy mess of Joel Schumacher’s Batman films, the seminal entry into Christopher Nolan’s Dark Knight trilogy took the character in a darker, more grounded direction and would help to push the genre to new, unexplored heights.
